In 2012 the City of Edmonton decided to build housing that would cover 1/3 of Skyrattler Park, removing the sports fields and leaving the remaining space fractured and mostly unusable. The Skyrattler neighbourhood organized and became a powerful voice to save the park, citing numerous common-sense reasons. The Skyrattler Neighbourhood Association was formed, and working alongside the Blue Quill Community League continued to press the City for answers and alternatives. Our voice was heard by Michael Walters who continued to advocate on our behalf. After the City made numerous attempts to find alternative sites in the neighbourhood, Skyrattler Park was dropped from the program and rezoned back to municipal reserve on August 17, 2021.
This year’s Community League Day will celebrate the achievements of all those involved in the efforts to successfully save our park.
