Tree Planting Celebration Event

On September 24th, 2024, the Blue Quill Community League hosted the Urban Forestry event. This gathering brought together students and residents for a day filled with hands-on learning and community engagement, all centered around the importance of trees in our urban landscape.

A Day of Discovery

Students had a fantastic time rotating through various workshops, diving into activities like crafts, dendrochronology, insect exploration, tree pruning, and tree planting. The students enjoyed asking questions and soaking up knowledge from City workers stationed at each workshop. It was a wonderful opportunity for our community’s youth to engage with the natural world and understand the crucial role trees play in our environment.

Beautifying Our Community

The event didn’t just educate; it also resulted in benefits for our neighborhood. The newly planted trees will provide much-needed shade for our playgrounds, making them more enjoyable for families. Additionally, these trees will enhance the beauty of the Blue Quill Community Garden, expanding its footprint and creating a more inviting space for all.

What made this event even more special was the community’s involvement in planning. Residents shared their recommendations on tree species and planting locations, ensuring that the trees not only fit well in our public spaces but also considered the needs and desires of those who use them.

Engage and Learn

We invite all residents to visit the playground and garden to learn more about the tree species we planted. Each tree features a QR code that can be scanned for information about its characteristics and benefits. Plus, there’s a chance to win a small prize by filling out a short form—don’t miss out!

A Grateful Community

We’d also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the City for their generous donation of shrubs and wild strawberry plants, which have been beautifully incorporated into our perennial beds. These additions will not only enhance the visual appeal of our community spaces but also support local wildlife.

In closing, a huge thank you to everyone who participated in this event—from our dedicated City workers to the engaged residents of Blue Quill. Your commitment to enhancing our community’s green spaces is truly commendable. Let’s continue to nurture and protect our environment together!
